How to Choose the Right PPE for Your Clinic or Practice

August 13, 2026 · Maison Supremus Medical

Stocking PPE for a clinic, practice, or aged care facility is a different exercise to buying a box of masks for home use — you're balancing protection level, comfort for staff wearing it for hours, and cost across ongoing volume. Here's how to think through it.

Gloves: nitrile vs latex, and sizing

Nitrile has become the standard for most clinical settings — it's latex-free (removing allergy risk for staff and patients), resists punctures well, and holds up to a broad range of chemicals and sanitisers. Order across a spread of sizes rather than defaulting to one; ill-fitting gloves reduce dexterity and increase tear risk, both of which matter more in clinical tasks than general use.

Masks and respirators: matching grade to task

  • Surgical masks — general clinical use, reception areas, standard patient contact
  • P2/N95 respirators — higher-risk airborne exposure situations, aerosol-generating procedures
  • Face shields — added splash protection, often paired with a mask rather than used alone

Matching the grade to the actual task avoids both under-protecting staff and over-spending on respirator-grade PPE where a surgical mask is genuinely sufficient.

Gowns: level ratings

Gowns are rated by fluid protection level (commonly Level 1–4) — higher levels cost more and are appropriate for higher fluid-exposure procedures. Most general clinic and aged-care use sits comfortably at Level 1–2; reserve higher-level gowns for procedures that specifically call for them.

Buying in volume without overstocking

PPE has a shelf life, and storage space in a clinic is rarely generous. A rolling order cadence — restocking on a schedule rather than bulk-buying once a year — tends to work better than large infrequent orders, both for cash flow and for avoiding expired stock.
